SERVICE DOG TRAINING

What is a Service Dog?

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. These tasks must be directly related to the person's disability. Service dogs are granted specific rights, including access to public places and transportation, to assist their handlers effectively.

The Responsibilities of Having a Service Dog:

While having a service dog can greatly enhance your quality of life, it also comes with significant responsibilities. It's important to recognize that a service dog might not be the right option for everyone. We will guide you through the process and help evaluate whether a service dog is suitable for your needs.

A service dog should be a partner in your daily life, and building this relationship requires effort, even with a highly trained dog. Dogs are not machines, and it’s unreasonable to expect them to behave like one. When you get a service dog, it marks the beginning of your journey together.

Your dog's success will depend largely on your dedication and effort, but rest assured, we are here to guide and support you every step of the way.

Our Training Philosophy:

Our dogs are carefully chosen and raised in a home environment from an early age. They are trained using positive reinforcement, allowing them to make their own choices. We encourage them to explore and even make "mistakes" as puppies, fostering their ability to make decisions and handle complex situations effectively.

Begin Your Journey

A service dog should be capable of making its own decisions and dealing with various situations independently. If you think you need a service dog and are ready to start this journey, please get in touch with us. We are here to support you in creating a meaningful and effective partnership with your service dog.

PROGRAM OPTIONS

Workshops for trainers and dog owners:

Our Workshops for Trainers and Dog Owners

1) Get Ready to Go on Vacation:

Most dog owners would love to take their dog on vacation, but it can be challenging with long drives, flights, and new environments. This can stress both you and your dog. In this workshop, through five group meetings and one private consultation, you will learn how to prepare your dog for your next adventure.

Topics covered include:

  • Helping your dog navigate new places

  • Managing stress for your dog

  • Using public transport

  • Visiting restaurants

  • Handling elevators and more

We will emphasize safety and your dog’s well-being throughout the process.

2) Can My Dog Be a Service Dog?

We often get asked if a dog can become a service dog. During this eight-week workshop, you will learn what a service dog is and how a service dog can assist you or a loved one.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding service dog roles

  • Learning common service dog behaviors

  • Evaluating if your dog may be suitable for full service dog training

Please note, attending this workshop will not grant you or your dog a service dog certification.

3) Diabetic Alert for the Family Dog

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell, which can be harnessed to detect hypoglycemia. In this workshop, we will teach you how to train your dog to recognize the scent associated with low blood sugar. While we cannot guarantee success, most dogs learn to pick up on the scent when our training protocol is followed in full.

4) Puppies, Puppies, They’re Like New Sponges

Bringing a new puppy home is exciting but can also be overwhelming. During the first few months of a puppy's life, there is a unique window of opportunity to help them learn about the world in a constructive way.

This intensive eight-week workshop will include:

  • Twice-weekly meetings, both group and private

  • Techniques to maximize your puppy’s learning potential

We will help you make the most of your puppy’s sponge-like brain during this crucial developmental period.

If you are interested in any of our workshops, please get in touch with us. We look forward to helping you and your dog achieve your training goals.
